Freedom, rejoice, celebration. This painting encapsulates these feelings. A group of fluid irises move across the canvas in a rhythmic dance, swaying from side to side. While the placement of saturated warm and cool colors creates vibrant energy that commands our attention, the contrast of restful negative space gives our eyes a peaceful, relaxing place to visit. This painting is the finale of my Iris Collection, which will forever hold a special place in my heart.
 
Dancing Iris began as a pencil sketch, which I then traced some of the lines with lime green paint to define where the most contrast would be. Next, I painted an underpainting using washes of color to help establish hues and values. From there I continued building up color and value using layers of paint. Finally, I refined the white negative space by painting a layers of gesso over it.
