About Jamie Lynn
Born and raised in Raleigh, I have always been an artist. From a young age I found art to be exciting, challenging and fulfilling. Drawing and painting provided me comfort and I worked diligently to improve my skills through classes and lessons. I continued to pursue art in college and earned my BFA, and a NC Teaching License from Meredith College. I began teaching in the NC public school system while also obtaining my National Boards for Professional Teaching Standards, and a MAEd in Art Education from East Carolina University.
There were two major experiences in my life that truly formed my journey, defined my perspective, and changed my spirit and future. The year I lost her best friend unexpectedly was the first one. Processing through this tragedy taught me how fragile, short, and precious life is. The experience awakened a need in me to make the most of each day. My eyes were opened to how fleeting and unpredictable life can be.
In 2023 the unthinkable happened: my precious 6-year- old son was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, and gained his angel wings in November. I feel blessed I was able to be by his side every day during his intense 10-month treatment. My current body of work expresses so much of this journey and the emotions that I felt, and those of which I continue to struggle to find words for. Although Mason is in Heaven, he continues to be my biggest inspiration and the greatest teacher I have ever had.
I believe art is essential, powerful and should be accessible to all. Because of this I aim to bring beauty, meaning and community into the world with my work. I encourage others to use art as a healthy outlet to process difficult feelings. I am proud to be a high school art teacher and have been teaching and mentoring young artists for over 15-years, sharing my passion with younger generations.
Artist Statement
My work exists at the intersection of nature and personal experiences. I take inspiration from the natural world, which provides limitless beauty. By deconstructing subjects to their more essential elements, I produce compositions emphasizing organic shapes, colors, forms and texture. Each painting offers insight and reflections on a particular moment in time.
I am an observer. I notice nuances of my subjects, while concurrently allowing my intuition to interpret what needs to be emphasized and subordinated, and how. I prefer acrylic paint due to its versatility and quick drying rate. By using multiple layers of paint I am able to achieve rich colors and deep values.
My art, although visually diverse, offers significant perspectives on the fluctuations of the human condition. Being sensitive to experiences, my work expresses the feelings of life's unpredictable journey. Inspired by the scenery around me, my imagination and impactful experiences, my goal is to create meaningful, beautiful and accessible fine art.
